For now, Shell is keeping its recipe a secret. Last year, Indy cars ran on 100-octane fuel made from 85 percent ethanol derived from corn and 15 percent racing gasoline. Shell said this season's IndyCar fuel remains a 100-octane E85 blend.
IndyCar has two engine manufacturers (Honda and Chevrolet) and a single chassis supplier. Villeneuve won the Indianapolis 500 in 1995 and is the F1 World Champion for 1997. Alonso is the F1 World Champion for 2005 and 2006, along with winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice in 2018 and 2019.
IndyCar does offer a higher minimum wage than NASCAR, with its least expensive drivers earning $300,000 annually compared to its rivals' $200,000. Only two drivers make six figures from IndyCar though, with Arrow McLaren's 23-year-old star Pato O'Ward taking home $1million.
The engines are now fuel-efficient DOHC 2.2-liter twin-turbo V6 with four-stroke piston Otto cycle developing an estimated 550–750 hp depending on the level of boost used and no inter-cooling systems. They are limited to 12,000 rpm and weighed up to 248 lb (112 kg).
