Wilfred Frost, 57, of Newalla was the pilot of a plane that crashed on a city street, Sarasota Police Department spokesman Jay Frank said.

No other injuries were reported. The pilot was flying a home-built Seawind 3000 from Sarasota to Venice when he reported a problem and attempted to turn back, Federal Aviation Administrations spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said. The plane struck the roof of an elementary school, crashed on a city street and burst into flames, officials said. Marshall Alexander, a neighbor in Newalla, said he learned about the accident late Saturday when a neighbor told him about the crash. The news left him stunned.

"It's kind of a shock to everybody," he said. "We're all kind of a big family out here, and we all look out after each other. That's kind of how we do out here." Alexander said Frost was a retired Air Force pilot with thousands of hours of flying experience. He said Frost was in Florida attending a builders assistance program in which the plane manufacturers were supervising the construction of the small amphibian plane. Frost had been working on the plane for several years.

Alexander said he first saw the plane when Frost moved into the neighborhood about five years ago. The neighborhood in which Frost lived is filled with flying enthusiasts. The neighborhood features a small, private airport that is jointly owned by several residents. Alexander said everyone in the neighborhood knew the plane was nearing completion. "The last time he left, all of us out here were hoping to see if he was going to fly this time," Alexander said.

Alexander, who is also a pilot, said the accident will not prevent him from flying in the future. "I drive past a car wreck every day, and I keep right on driving," he said. "That's the way aviation is, that's the way cars are. We all look around and try to see if we can learn from accidents and mistakes that's education." WILLIAMS, Gracie, died Saturday. A planned search for the remains of two Oklahoma girls missing for more than five years will be fruitless, the man accused of killing them said. Authorities plan to scour four trash-filled mining pits in Kansas for Ashley Freeman and Lauria Bible, 16-year-old friends who disappeared from Craig County, OK, in December 1999. Investigators say the locations were chosen because of a confession by suspect Jeremy Jones. But Jones told the Joplin Globe he has never killed anyone, and detectives will find nothing in their search. "Let 'em go try to find something," Jones said in a phone interview.

"Man, they're wasting their time." Craig County Sheriff Jimmie Sooter has said Jones admitted taking the girls from Welch, OK, to southeastern Kansas, where he shot them and threw the bodies in a pit. But Jones said investigators came to him with a handful of maps asking what places he had visited. He said he pointed to locations he was familiar with but says he never indicated he killed the girls or dumped their bodies in those places. The 32-year-old has not been charged in connection with the girls' disappearances. He does face charges for slayings in Alabama, Louisiana and Georgia, but he denies he's guilty.

"I have never took a human life," he said. "I ain't told them nothing." Freeman and Bible haven't been seen since December 1999, when Freeman's parents were found slain in the smoldering ruins of the family's mobile home. Bible had spent the night with her friend. Sooter said Jones told him in an interview months ago at a Mobile, jail that he shot Freeman's parents, torched their trailer and then posed as a rescuer when the 16-year-olds fled the flames. His alleged confession led officers to decide to pick through five years worth of trash in the southeast Kansas mining pits.

The search was to begin today, but authorities say it will be delayed a couple of weeks to allow for better coordination of equipment and law officers by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Sooter has acknowledged that even if the information allegedly provided by Jones was accurate, the search would be "very difficult at best." STONER, Milton "Buster, "77, died Sunday. Memorial Gardens Authorities seek inmate after paperwork mix-up By the Associated Press MILWAUKEE An Oklahoma prison inmate who walked away from sheriffs custody because of a paperwork mix-up is believed to have fled the state, authorities said Sunday. The Milwaukee County Sheriffs Department has offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Cesar Lira, 34, who was extradited to Milwaukee on other charges. Since no paperwork from Oklahoma accompanied his extradition to make sure he stayed in custody, Lira posted $15,000 bail and walked away.

Authorities believe Lira is traveling with Manuel Ayala, 35, in a white 1991 Toyota Land Cruiser. 'We don't have any information on where they are heading, we just presume they are out of state," said Darice Landon, the sheriffs spokeswoman. "That is information from our detectives." Lira faces charges of felony escape and endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon after he fled Wisconsin on April 15, 2004, with his girlfriend and daughter. According to authorities, Lira was in custody for violating parole on a 1992 drug conviction, and he was being taken to a hospital when he jumped from a wheelchair into a car that had driven alongside the hospital entrance. Spotted in Oklahoma the next day, he led officers on a chase that ended in a crash that killed his girlfriend, Maryalyn Or-donze, 27.

The couple's young daughter had minor injuries. Lira was charged with second-degree murder in the Oklahoma case and received a 20-year prison term.
