Helix offers a mattress quiz that recommends the exact model in their line that caters to your sleep position, weight and special needs. The Helix Midnight is the middle of the road model, featuring a ‘medium firm’ feel that works best with the largest variety of people.

Who it’s best for: The Helix tested best with side and back sleepers under 230 pounds. We also recommend it to couples, who will experience minimal disturbances from their partners movements.

Feel: The surface of the Helix has a medium-firm, cushioning memory foam feel, which hugs close to your body and relieves pressure. It’s fairly breathable, and should work well for most sleepers who tend to get hot during the night.

What it’s Made of: The Helix is a hybrid mattress, meaning there are foam layers on the surface and coils in the core of the mattress.

Why Choose the Helix Midnight: The Helix is an all-around winner, it relieves pressure, supports spinal alignment, doesn’t overheat, and can be customized to your needs. If you’re not sure exactly what sort of mattress you want, this is practically the safest bet you can get.

The DreamCloud feels like a luxury hybrid mattress, but has a price tag that’s practically unheard of for a hybrid. It scored only slightly lower across the board than the Helix Midnight, our best overall pick, but is significantly more affordable.

Who it’s best for: The DreamCloud also tested best with side and back sleepers under 230 pounds. We recommend it to people looking for a balanced hybrid experience that doesn’t break the bank.

Feel: The Memory foam on the surface is thicker and denser than many competing hybrids including the Helix, giving it a bouncier, more supportive feel and less of a body-hugging feel. This makes it a bit easier to move around in.

What it’s Made of: The DreamCloud is a hybrid mattress, with thick foam laters on the surface and coils in the core of the mattress.

What we don’t like: Our tests indicated that the DreamCloud has pretty decent temperature regulation, but those thick foam layers certainly will trap some body heat. If you know yourself to get particularly hot throughout the night, there are likely better options.

Why Choose the Dreamcloud: If you’re searching for a mattress and your budget is less than $800, this is probably the highest quality mattress you’re going to find. We also recommend the bed for someone who wants the pressure relief of memory foam but doesn’t like the sinking, body-hugging sensation that often comes with it.

Sleeping Position

Side sleepers have found the Dreamcloud mattress to be a perfect fit, offering a balance of support and comfort that enhances their sleep quality. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature is an affordable hybrid from a brand that seems to never miss. This bed has a sub $500 starting price and comes in three firmness options.

Who it’s best for: An affordable and customizable hybrid is practically ideal for anybody, but we especially recommend this bed to people who aren’t looking for that ‘medium firm’ feel that most of the mattresses on this list have. Say you sleep on your stomach and need a firmer mattress, or are less than 130 pounds and need a very soft bed. This bed has an option for everyone.

Feel: The proprietary TitanFlex polyfoam that Brooklyn Bedding uses almost feels more like latex than foam. This gives it a bouncier and more supportive feel, and doesn’t conform to your body as much as memory foam.

What it’s Made of: Polyfoam layers on the surface and coils in the core.

What we don’t like: Since this bed uses polyfoam instead of memory foam in the comfort layers it doesn’t conform as closely to the body and thus doesn’t relieve as much pressure as other beds on this list. The trade off is better breathability and ease of movement.

Why Choose the Brooklyn Bedding Signature: You have a specific firmness in mind, you want quality for below-average price, and you prefer more responsive polyfoam to that ‘hugging’ feel of memory foam.

At its core, the Saatva is the most like the mattress you probably grew up with, only a lot nicer. Its high-quality innerspring hybrid construction is a breath of fresh air in a market full of identical foam based beds.

Who it’s best for: Coming in multiple firmness options, this bed is for sleepers of any position or weight who prefer a bouncy, supportive mattress with a plush pillow top surface. It’s also exceptionally breathable, so if you get hot at night, this is a great option.

Feel: Even with the soft option, this bed feels quite sturdy and supportive. The euro-top surface is quite plush and airy, but the foam and coil layers not far under that stop you from sinking far into the bed.

What it’s made of: Euro-top on the surface, thin foam layer, a micro-coil system, and then larger coils in the support core.

What we don’t like: If you like the feeling of body-conforming memory foam, pick just about any other bed on this list.

Why choose the Saatva Classic: If you like the traditional innerspring feel, want a high-quality, durable bed, and need something that sleeps nice and cool, the Saatva is perfect.

The Winkbed is a high-end mattress that leans a little more towards a traditional innerspring feel than many other hybrids. It has a great balance of pressure relief and support, and we’ve given it some of the highest ratings among all the beds we’ve tested.

Who it’s best for: With four firmness options, sleepers of any position or weight can enjoy the Winkbed. The great support makes it ideal for those with pain issues, since it tends to keep your spine aligned and prevents your mid-section from sinking. Plus, its excellent breathability makes it a nice choice for sleepers who tend to overheat throughout the night.

Feel: The Winkbed definitely has more of an innerspring “hotel-bed” feel than a foam feel. Its euro-top feels very plush and cloud-like, but under that its foam comfort layers are thin, making for a sturdy surface without a ton of sinking.

What it’s made of: Plush Euro-top on the surface, then some foam layers, and coils in the core.

What we don’t like: Its starting price of $850 dollars is certainly appropriate given the quality of the materials and construction, but it’s more expensive than many other hybrids on this list.

Why choose the Winkbed: We’ve tested this bed, and it outperformed almost every other mattress on the market in most categories (check out our full review link below). Whether you have pain or just want a durable, supportive, and breathable mattress, we highly recommend this option.

The Nectar Premier Copper has a thick, firm memory foam comfort layer, and a lot of cooling technology such as copper and phase change material. It’s a bit on the firmer side, but it relieves pressure well and sleeps cool.

Who it’s best for:Its firmer feel makes it more suited to back and stomach sleepers on paper, but we had several side sleepers on our testing team feel just fine while sleeping on the Premier Copper. Combination sleepers should find this bed especially ideal. People who enjoy the pressure relief of memory foam but need something a bit more breathable will love this bed as well.

Feel:This mattress really has that dense, ‘tempur-pedic’ style memory foam that slowly conforms and hugs your body. The phase-change material in the cover keeps the surface very cool.

What’s made of: Phase-change material cover, two different memory foam layers, polyfoam, and coils in the core.

What we don’t like: This is a pretty thick and heavy mattress, making it a bit difficult to move around compared to other hybrids.

Why choose the Nectar Premier Copper: You like memory foam, you like a firm bed, and you want something that sleeps cool.

The Leesa Sapria Hybrid is a high-end hybrid mattress that we’ve rated among the best in the market.

Who it’s best for: If you and your partner are easily disturbed by each other’s movements, this is an excellent option. Its foam layers isolate motion very well, meaning when you move on one side, the person on the other side of the bed doesn’t feel it. Good edge support also means you can sleep close to the edge without sinking. It’s medium firm feel makes it most ideal for side and back sleepers under 230 pounds.

Feel: The Leesa definitely has that close-conforming, memory foam feel, but it’s a bit bouncier than other similar foam hybrids on the market. It’s also surprisingly breathable considering the thick foam surface.

What it’s made of: The cover is a cotton blend, and then you have three different foam layers followed by a coil support core.

What we don’t like: With a starting price of over $1000, it’s not the cheapest bed on the list. But the quality of the materials certainly line up with the price-point.

Why Choose the Leesa Sapira Hybrid: Choose the Sapira if you’re a couple looking for a lot of room and minimal disturbances, or if you’re a side sleeper looking for a durable, pressure relieving mattress that performs well all-around.

The Nolah is a luxury mattress full of quality materials. It strikes that perfect balance of cushioning and support, and tested really well among side sleepers.

Who it’s best for: Side sleepers of any weight tend to love this mattress, but its multiple firmness options make it good for just about any sleeping position.

Feel: The euro-top and thick foam layers on the surface make it quite plush, but since it’s polyfoam instead of memory foam, it’s a bit bouncier and less ‘hugging’ than many hybrids. The euro-top also gives it that cool, plush ‘hotel’ style feel.

What it’s made of: Cool-to-the-touch proprietary fabric in the cover, foam euro-top, polyfoam comfort laters, and coils in the core.

What we don’t like: With a starting price of around $1000, the Nolah is definitely a luxury offering.

Why Choose the Nolah Evolution 15: Choose this bed if you’re a side sleeper who has a specific firmness preference and/or you’re willing to dish out a durable, comfortable, all-around winner.

The Layla is a flippable mattress that’s ‘medium soft’ on one side and ‘firm’ on the other. It has a close-conforming memory foam surface feel.

Who it’s best for: Some people sleep in different positions night to night, or need to change their usual sleeping position due to sleep apnea or other reasons. By having a flippable mattress, you’re not committing to a single firmness and have optionality when you sleep. It’s also good for couples, as the foam isolates motion very well.

Feel: The Layla has a cushy memory foam feel that slowly conforms to your body when laying on it. It relieves pressure very well.

What it’s made of: Each side has memory foam, with the softer side having thicker layers. In the middle there is a coil support core.

What we don’t like: If you’re somebody who changes positions a lot during the night, the flippable design doesn’t really do anything for you. Also a lot of people prefer a ‘medium firm’, and neither side of the Layla is that.

Why Choose the Layla Hybrid: If you like memory foam and want two firmness options in one, the Layla hybrid is the best option on the market.

Expert Tested. Sleeper Approved.

Best Hybrid Mattress (85)

Over the past eight years, our Seattle-basedTest Labhas performed hands-on tests on more than 4,000 sleep products — and nearly 2,000 of them are mattresses.

As product experts, we stay up to date on the latest news in sleep science and product trends. We use this knowledge to fuel our data-backed recommendations. Many of our testers have worked directly with mattress manufacturers and visited actual mattress factories. On occasion, a sleep health expert might stop by to tweak a firmness rating.

When we test a mattress, we collect data across six major performance categories and combine these results with real-world feedback. We use tools and tech to monitor features like heat retention, motion isolation, and pressure mapping. In order to ensure our findings are inclusive of all sleepers, our team consists of people with varying body types and sleep positions.

Mattresses aren’t one-size-fits-all. The perfect bed for you is going to depend on general points like your body weight and sleeping position, as well as unique points like if you have back pain, if you sleep hot at night, or if you just like the feel of latex over memory foam. Our goal at the Test Lab is to help take the guesswork out of your mattress-buying process.

So How Did We Pick the Best Hybrid Mattress?

To select the best hybrid mattress, we performed a barrage of tests to measure performance criteria such as pressure relief, motion isolation, edge support, and temperature control. Our team also took turns lying on each mattress to determine how comfortable it felt for different sleep positions and body types. During these tests, we kept an eye out for models that stood out in certain categories — this helps us determine accolades for each selection in our best hybrid mattresses list. Other factors such as price and size range also play a role in our selection process.

What Is a Hybrid Mattress and How Is It Made?

Hybrid mattresses feature foam or latex comfort layers and support cores with steel coils. They combine the adaptive materials of all-foam and all-latex models with the robust coil systems of traditional innersprings, making them a “best of both worlds” option if you’re seeking a mattress that both cushions your body and feels stable. Hybrids are widely available, and have middle-of-the-road price-points compared to other mattress types.

Best Hybrid Mattress (86)

Comfort System

Most hybrids begin with memory foam, adaptive polyfoam, or latex comfort layers. Some incorporate two or even all three of these materials. The top layer or layers contour closely to your body, and the last layer — known as the transitional layer — creates a dense buffer between your body and the support core.

Support Core

Hybrids feature steel coils in their pocketed coil support cores. Most hybrid coils are encased, or “pocketed,” in fabric and engineered to move independently, reducing motion transfer on the surface without sacrificing reinforcement. Some hybrids use the non-pocketed coils found in traditional innersprings. These models may be easier to move on, but tend to transfer more movement and disrupt sleep for couples. Many hybrids also include dense foam base layers.

What to Look for in a Hybrid Mattress

If you’re shopping for a new mattress and have zeroed in on hybrids, there are a few considerations to make before deciding which model to choose. These include the following.

Mattress Quality and Durability

Choosing a mattress made from high-quality materials helps ensure strong performance and a long lifespan. High-density memory foam and organic latex are especially durable and resistant to wear and tear. Your hybrid’s support core also affects longevity. Thicker, taller coils provide stronger overall support and prevent the comfort layers from sagging prematurely. The average hybrid mattress performs for 6 to 8 years, with latex hybrids usually lasting longer than foam hybrids.

Pressure Relief and Contouring

A hybrid that contours evenly to the body and alleviates pressure is important for people with arthritis, sciatica, and chronic shoulder, back, or hip pain. Hybrids with memory foam or adaptive polyfoam comfort layers contour closely, especially softer models. These mattresses are best for people who need deep pressure relief. Latex hybrids contour gently, making them better for sleepers with moderate pressure who dislike the hug-like quality of foam.

Ease of Movement

Latex hybrids are responsive and bouncy, allowing you to move across the surface without feeling stuck. Foam hybrids tend to sink more beneath your weight, so you may have a harder time moving across these models. Hybrids with reinforced perimeter coils allow you to get in and out of bed with ease.

Temperature Regulation

Most hybrids regulate temperature well because their coil systems promote steady airflow. Ventilated comfort layers and breathable cover fabrics can further boost a hybrid’s cooling properties. We’ve found latex retains less heat than foam, so latex hybrids tend to provide the best temperature control.

Pricing

The average hybrid costs $1,000 to $3,000 in a queen size. This makes them more expensive than foam and innerspring mattresses, and less expensive than latex and airbed models. Foam hybrids tend to be more affordable than latex hybrids.

Should You Buy a Hybrid Mattress?

Hybrids are a good compromise if you want a mattress that cushions your body and provides sturdy support. Foam hybrids are ideal if you prefer close, even contouring, whereas latex hybrids are a better option if cooling and ease of movement are your top priorities.

Hybrid Pros

  1. Balanced design with cushioning comfort layers and strong coils
  2. Steady airflow promotes breathability and cooling
  3. Above-average edge support
  4. Widely available online and in stores

Hybrid Cons

  1. Limited options for people who prefer softer mattresses
  2. Coils may produce motion transfer and disrupt sleep for couples
  3. More expensive on average than foam and traditional innerspring models

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a hybrid mattress cost?

The average queen size hybrid costs about $2,000, and most fall within the range of $1,000 to $3,000. Foam hybrids cost a bit less on average than latex hybrids. Other factors affecting cost include size, brand, and whether you buy online or in a mattress store.

Is a hybrid mattress better than memory foam?

Hybrids cushion the body like memory foam mattresses, but also feel more supportive due to their coil support cores. You may prefer a hybrid over a memory foam model if you want a mattress that alleviates pressure without sinking too much beneath your weight. However, hybrids tend to be more expensive than memory foam mattresses.

How long does a hybrid mattress last?

The average hybrid performs for 6 to 8 years before a replacement is needed. The expected lifespan is longer for latex hybrids because latex is more durable and resistant to wear than foam. You may also get more mileage out of a hybrid with a zoned support core. Thicker coils beneath your midsection often means less sinkage and better longevity.

Are hybrid mattresses good for your back?

Hybrids feature adaptive comfort layers that cushion and contour to your body, making them a good choice for people with back pain — but choosing the right firmness is key. A hybrid that feels too soft may sink beneath your weight and cause lower back pain, while an overly firm hybrid may not alleviate enough pressure buildup along your spine.

What firmness level is best for a hybrid mattress?

The best firmness depends on a person’s body weight and sleep position. Side sleepers and people weighing less than 130 pounds often prefer soft to medium soft mattresses, while back sleepers over 230 pounds may need a firm mattress that resists deep sinkage. Sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds often find medium to medium firm mattresses comfortable regardless of their position.

What is the best coil count and gauge for a hybrid mattress?

Coil count is not a useful metric for judging a hybrid’s quality. Our tests show little variation in performance between hybrids with low and high coil counts. Gauge, or coil thickness, is more relevant. The sturdiest hybrids have thicker low-gauge coils around their perimeter to protect the edges from sinkage, and beneath your midsection to reinforce the heaviest areas of your body.

How does it feel to sleep on a hybrid mattress?

Hybrids combine the adaptive qualities of foam and latex hybrids with the stability of traditional innersprings. Expect moderate contouring, a light bounce when you get in and out of bed, and strong support when lying still. Most hybrids also sleep cool because their coil systems generate steady air circulation.
